Harvest Festival 2013!

Come and join our annual celebration of everything that’s wonderful about Hogacre and OxGrow.

Enjoy freshly harvested food from the community garden, local beer, live music, apple pressing, games for kids, arts & crafts, and of course just relaxing in the beautiful surroundings.

Low Carbon South Oxford Food Group will be cooking up a storm with the produce we’ve been growing on site all year specially for this occasion, supplemented with various other local delights, so please bring a big appetite with you!

The Big Dig – March 16th

The Big Dig Day is a national event all about bringing people down to their local community garden to get growing. Whether you are new to gardening or an experienced cultivator we need your help to make our garden grow.

On the Big Dig Day we have planned four special projects:

– Installing our compost toilet,
– creating flood proofed raised beds,
– making a plastic bottle greenhouse,
– and building an outdoor pizza oven.

There will also be plenty of other activities to keep us busy!

We’re planning to prepare a lunch for all our volunteers on the day with the help of the Low Carbon South Oxford Food Group. To help us ensure that we have enough for everyone, but not too much that we’ll be throwing loads away, please rsvp to this event by clicking this link

(RSVPs are not essential as the session is open to everyone to pop in and out as they need to throught the day.)

Hogacre Harvest Festival 2012

Our second annual harvest festival!
12-4pm on Sunday 14th October at Hogacre Common

Bigger and better than ever this year; more food, more music, more all round fun! We’ve dedicated an entire quarter of our garden to growing food for this event and you’ve never seen so many parsnips in all your life, along with pumpkins, leeks, carrots, beetroot, celeriac, beans, peas, corn, onions, turnips and all manner of things I can’t remember right now, so we need plenty of mouths to feed.

There will also be apple pressing (so bring apples and bottles), games for kids, beer from Compass Brewery, a ceilidh band, an OxGrow work party (of course) and much more.

See you there!

Roll up, roll up!

Sunday 13 May: Spring Awakening + Asparagus Feast

It’s DinnerTime!

We are very excited to announce the launch of Oxford’s new community kitchen!

Sunday 13th November at the Turl Street Kitchen, Oxford.

DinnerTime is a celebration of food, family and friends – a way  to reclaim food in your community by making and sharing a meal together, reducing the amount of food we throw away and maybe gaining a new skill along the way.

Our first meal will be a trial for creating a ‘how to…’ guide that we are hoping other groups will use to  start their own community kitchen. Come and help us!

DinnerTime is a collaboration between OxGrow, Food Justice and the Community Action Group Project, with kind support from the Oxford Food Bank. It will be held at the Oxford Hub‘s buzzing new social action centre, just above the Turl Street Kitchen.

Please RSVP to if you’d like to attend some or all of the event.

So how does it work?  Simple.  Below is how we imagine the evening panning out.

3pm  – 4pm        Hunt & Gather

Bring food you don’t know what to do with from 3pm onwards.  This could be tins you’ve had in the back of the cupboards for ages, spare vegetables, pulses, herbs and spices, gluts from your allotment, left over apple crumble, etc.  Generally, anything that’s edible and too good to throw out.  (Sorry but we aren’t able to take meat or dairy products for reasons of food safety).

4pm – 6pm        Let’s get cooking!

Come and help prepare the meal, this is where the fun begins!  Make something yourself, lead a group or simply give a helping hand.  There will be plenty of cooking equipment and DinnerTime chefs on hand to give advice (by the way all DinnerTime helpers have food hygiene, first aid certificates and a hearty appetite!). All ages and abilities welcome!

6pm – 7pm        DINNER TIME!

Sit down and enjoy the fruits of your labour; taste new things, have a natter, meet new people.  Remember to bring a plate, mug and cutlery .  If you have any allergies then please let us know in advance so we can cook to accommodate you or even better, come show us how it’s done.  Any food left over can be either taken away (bring some Tupperware if you like), donated or, if all else fails, composted.

7pm onwards   Film

Relax after a hearty meal with a hand-picked film, or get a drink from the bar and carry on chatting.

Easy peasy, Lemon squeezy!

Hope to see you there (don’t forget to RSVP),

Love from the DinnerTime Crew xxx

Hogacre Harvest!

OxGrow is teaming up with the lovely people at Hogacre Common Eco-Park to have a Harvest Festival to celebrate all the fun we’ve had and everything we’ve learned while turning Corpus Christi College’s sportsground into a community space over the last seven months. Join us!

Come along any time between 12 and 4pm for an OxGrow work-party, apple pressing, conker fights, music and poetry, potato and spoon races, slug hunts, a go on the bicycle-powered smoothie maker, a slice of cake (some made using Hogacre Honey!), a talk from an expert on growing exotic crops in the UK, local food (some made from OxGrow’s harvest), local beer, the hand-over of our rent (a jar of honey) to Corpus Christi College’s bursar (a.k.a the landowner) and the much-awaited switch-on of Hogacre’s wind brand new wind turbine!

For the day-time event, bring friends (of all ages), gluts of apples to press, cakes for the “bring and buy cake sale”, gluts of veg from your allotment to swap on our “veg swap stall”, and perhaps a picnic in case we are over-run by festival-goers and run out of food…

From 6pm til late, after the kids go home, we will be having a sing-song around a bonfire, watching a film
(, and cooking up a pot of shark-fin melon soup!

For the evening’s events, bring musical instruments (even if they’re covered in cob-webs), food and drink to share (apples or spuds to bake in the fire?), a spring in your step and a twinkle in your eye!

If you fancy helping out on the day, come along at 11am when we’ll be dealing out (fun) jobs, or just find someone who looks busy when you arrive and ask how you can get stuck in!

Hope to see you there!

Harvest love,

Come to Arcane Festival with us!

Arcane Festival

Come and join Camp OxGrow at the Arcane Festival, 2nd – 4th September!

It’s a small and local festival of music and mirth. All profits go to their chosen charities, which this year includes Farms for City Children (thumbs up from us). And by some magic, if you mention OxGrow when you book your ticket, the organisers will pass on 25% to support our work (double thumbs up!).

This is what the festival organisers have to say:

“Tired of overcrowded, overpriced, oversponsored festivals with a mile-long loo queue?! Long for the good old days when the acts were up close & personal & the audience was part of the show? Welcome to Arcane: a secret pleasure garden springing up once a year only 10 miles from central Oxford!”

There’s local organic food courtesy of Vaults and Gardens; great beer and cider from super-local Shotover brewers; and a whole host of events for folks young and old.

Tickets are available online at  It is about the cheapest festival around – £40 for a 3-day weekend ticket, inc. camping, or £20 for a day ticket. (But PLEASE be sure to quote ‘OxGrow’ where it says ‘Please enter Agent/Charity Code’… we are literally operating on a shoestring so every ticket sale will be a big boost for us!)

Come and pitch your tent alongside ours at Camp OxGrow.  We’ll also be having a little stall and a get-together when Joe will be singing sea shanties and playing the mandolin, so let us know you’re coming (
